My Stupid Google Voice Dialing Problem

One of the things that annoys me to no end about Android is that when you install an app that does something important, like making telephone calls, it asks you to re-choose your default application for that action. This probably isn't a problem for normal people, but I have several apps on my phone that can make calls. Seriously, I bet I have six apps for calling. I use Google Voice for the majority of my calling and texting, so when it behaves strangely, my phone is kind of useless.

Most of the time, when my phone wants me to select a default app, I select the Android Phone app and move on with my life. Now that my phone has moved up to Android Marshmallow, I get asked to approve changes and things when I open an app. This most recent time, I accidentally selected Hangouts Dialer for outgoing calls with Google Voice.

This meant that all outgoing calls made via GV, went out through Hangouts. I tried my level best to mark the Android Phone app as my default dialer, but no luck. I was starting to think that Google finally forced GV and Hangouts into the same app, and I was going to be furious.

I Googled a bunch of things, tried a bunch of stuff, no luck. When I am in this situation, where I just can't find a solution or a documented error or work around, I figure that I'm doing something stupid. That turned out to be the case. I uninstalled the Hangouts Dialer, called the MCI test line from GV, and was prompted to choose a default app.

I wish that Android had a feature where you could check a box for "Don't Ask Me Again." Or some other way to say to a new app "I like you, but I don't like you like you."
